Elderslie is famous as the birthplace of William Wallace. Born around 1270, Wallace made his name at the Battle of Stirling Bridge when the English were routed. Following this, Wallace was made Guardian of the Kingdom of Scotland. After the defeat at the Battle of Falkirk, Wallace was captured and executed in 1305. Robert the Bruce continued the resistance against the English, achieving victory at the Battle of Bannockburn and so paved the way for the return of Scotland’s independence.
